Default jfh no way, no how would I live in

the desert areas of the southwest. I was watching man vs wild last night and Bear Gyllis pulled out a black light flash light in the Mohave desert at night. There were scorpions everywhere!

Texas has lots of Scorpions too! As a child I lived on a farm on the outskirts of San Antonio and was warned to always shake out my shoes before putting my feet in them because Scorpions liked to hide in shoes.
Nasty Critters!!!!!!!!

I have been here 3 years. Each year, I have found one scorpion in my house, a few geckos, tons of spiders. I have put foam around the pipes that enter the house, under the sinks and the hot water heater. I can't find any hole where they get in. They must ride in on the door or something. It is getting aggravating. The garage is worse. I don't go barefoot in the garage or outside.

I did have 2 roadrunners living in the area, so I was not worried about snakes. The left a year ago. There are at least 2 feral cats, so fewer lizards. Maybe they ate the roadrunners. Roadrunners are very fast, so maybe not.

One a year is way too many. I friend who lives in phoenix works with some guy who finds 3-4 a week in his home.

Scorpions are just ugly/creepy!

I also have these things that look like silverfish, only they are brown. I've put cedar blocks in my drawers and closets. That seems to help. They are disgusting.

The whole situation makes me feel dirty. The problem is that I'm such a neatnick. When people come to my home, they think no one lives here. Maybe it is because they see dust on my glass coffee table, and no one is here to clean it. Seems like it needs dusting every day.

Dusting is one of those things I gave up on except for the TV's. Once you
can convince yourself to get used to the dust, it gets easier to ignore.
Now I just dust when I know company is coming!
No stress, no pressure!

lizards eat mosquitos, and other pesky bugs.... what kind of foam did you put around your pipes... I was told to use aluminum around the pipes and that would keep them out better... diametrious earth around the outsde of the house would help keep the bugs from coming in too

Re house invasion:

Have you tried a 'mouse line'? You get a bag of sand, go right round the house with it, then go round again patting it down with a block of wood so its smooth. Next day check for breaks and cement any breaches.

Mice cannot bite through wire wool - I use a brillo pad (you have them in America?). If mice can't get through them , nothing else will either that's for sure!

I have not had one mouse or rat while living here. I think it is because of the feral cats roaming about. Also birds of prey. Maybe also due to those things that plug into the electric socket that sends signal through the wiring, making it uncomfortable for such things to live around it. I've used those for years, even in California.

I used that messy spray that immediately turns to a foam, like Styrofoam. Find it at any hardware store. Be sure to ware gloves. It stuck to my fingernails for days and days.

Mice, rats, snakes: No problems what so ever with them. With scorpions I have serious issues.

Speaking of Birds of Prey. I have birds of dead prey too. About 5:00 PM, 4 or 5 Turkey Vultures get on the very top of my roof, grasping onto the roof vent. They have a fairly good view of the valley, and it is more stable than the Mountain Cedars (junipers). It sounds like a brawl. It sounds like there are very bad golfers, as that happens a lot, and I find golf balls in my rain gutters. There are very few houses around, so my roof top really is a good vantage point for the vultures. It is creepy when I go out to look. They are all looking hungrily down at me. These are big birds. Creeeeepy!

I do like having them around though. They have no olfactory glands apparently. They will eat skunk road kill.

Tim eto move!
Is this an apartment or house? House
Nearest cross streets and city name: Val Vista & Southern, Mesa
Scorpion sightings, on a scale of 1 to 5 (1 is never seen a scorpion, 5 is see them all the time): 5
How long you've lived there: 9 years

When we first moved in my husband and his friends would scorpian hunt regularly, getting 50-100 some nights on our house and retaining walls. The side of the house was dubbed "scorpian alley"! We had 1.3 irrigated acres of former orange grove which the scorpians refused to give up. You could never go barefoot in the house and always had to look around a room when entering. By the time we moved, we would only get about 50 or so during the scorpian season. I was stung once, my husband 3 times and my father once. I had one fall off of the ceiling onto my shoulder, one crawled between my toes, another across my hand, they don't always sting. I am so glad to live in our new location totally scorpian free!
