\r\n \r\n I\'m menopausal, and was diagnosed with Osteopenia a couple of years ago, and told to increase my daily calcium intake, at least 1500 mg per day. I already was taking approximately 500-750 mgs. of calcium citrate per day.

\nInstead of increasing my calcium, I started taking Magnesium Malate and Vitamin k2 and D3. I feel good about this, haven\'t had another bone scan, but think I\'m on the right track. Any input? Thanks.\r\n

\nThanks also to BeachMan and Jim! Along with supplementation, I try to get in some weight bearing exercise, such as light weights and exercise bands on video dvds. I will definitely look into Boron, as I\'ve never thought of it before.

\nI appreciate all of your suggestions. I guess I\'m glad nobody pushed to increase calcium intake. I have the feeling too much will settle in my arteries, and I\'d rather have weak/porous bones than a stroke \r\n

\nAlso include a good multi-vitamin and additional Vitamin C with bioflavonoids (up to 2000 mg, e.g. 500 mg 4 times a day), and do include some light weight bearing or resistance exercise (walking, jogging, gardening, housework, use of resistance bands and/or light dumbells, etc. ). Consider investing in a treadmill exercise machine if you have no place to walk or jog. Try to do one or more of those at least two to three times a week. However, if just starting an exercise program, do not be tempted to overdo it with the exercise by doing it every day. Try instead to give your body a full 24 hours or more to repair the tissue which exercise initially breaks down, before exercising again. By doing so, that will allow your body to fully utilize the supplements, along with good nutritious food, including protein, to readily repair and restore the tissue and bone and make it even stronger, thanks in part to the exercise.

I\'ll add, though, that there is research recently that supports it is low levels of Vit D that causes calcium to build up in arteries and cause strokes, not excessive intake of calcium itself. I suffered from chronically low levels of Vit D (cause unknown) but now take a daily supplement. FINALLY I am within normal raange and my bone health is better! Vit D deficiency can cause many other serious illnesses so it is very beneficial to check your levels, as it will determine how well you absorb any calcium you are eating! Best of luck! \r\n

\r\n \r\n Hi there, I am suffering from severe osteo-arthiritis and am desperate. Pain killers I take between 250 & 300 per month plus the injections I get from my doctor. The professor said I need urgent knee replacements but because I do not have a medical-aid I have to go to the state hospital. Well here is just the problem, I phoned each state hospital in Republic of South Africa and guess what there is a 5 year waiting list. In a private hospital here the operation cost about R300,000.00 - R400,000.00 which I can definately not afford, I have no income and stay with my parents,. I am 58 years. \nI have recently seen photos of the results of prolozone therpay, where vitamins, homeopathics and ozone gas are injected into the joint of patients who were on a list for knee replacement... I saw the xrays... bone on bone.. after the prolotherapy the cartilage was fully regenerated and no surgery was needed.

\nI do not know what you will find in South Africa but I would start looking for a prolozone therapist..

\nAlso taking large amounts of geletain and glucosamine has helped som people. It is hard to know why it helps some and not others... I suspect it has to do with digestion and the aging process.
\n
\nThis may help. Call them and ask them if they do prolozone or injectible treatments for joints. For success on this treatment I would say that ozone would be an essential part. You may not get the same results without it.

\nHere are some ideas: Get some beef bones and simmer for 5-7 hrs with some veggies and a spoonful of lemon juice or vinegar. Drink daily. The broth will have a fair amount of useful calcium. Also, weight bearing exercises increase bone density A little know fact: eating high levels of protein leaches calcium from your bones, therefore, do not drink an extra glass of milk for calcium, you might run a higher calcium deficit by doing that. Also, magnesium citrate helps increase calcium absorption.

\nWhatever you do, do not take those fosamax or anti-osteoporosis drugs, they have tons of side effects.\r\n

Default Osteopenia/Osteoporosis

I'm menopausal, and was diagnosed with Osteopenia a couple of years ago, and told to increase my daily calcium intake, at least 1500 mg per day. I already was taking approximately 500-750 mgs. of calcium citrate per day.

Instead of increasing my calcium, I started taking Magnesium Malate and Vitamin k2 and D3. I feel good about this, haven't had another bone scan, but think I'm on the right track. Any input? Thanks.
