Cool Walking Benefits

I get in a few miles of walking every day, it's all done outdoors, and many times with my husband and my dog. Walking has many benefits, and is an 'easy on the joints' exercise which requires no equipment. Therefore, it's perfect for older folks.

Walking with a good friend is one of my favorite activities to do. It's easy to forget about our lymph system and how critically dependent it is on simple movement. Walking gets your lymph to move much more than normal everyday activities.

When I was immobile after my burn, after a while, I started to get cramps in my groin area. It was very strange but I realized it was because I hadn't walked and moved my lymph in so long. Never underestimate the health advantages of walking. I may just go for a walk tonight.

I'm sorry that you experienced such a severe burn Mommysunshine. If your feet will allow a walk tonight, I hope it's very enjoyable.

And check out the lovely super-moon tonight. Largest of 2013. I use a rebounder mostly, because the temps are in the upper 90s already. Supposed to be 100F this weekend. Otherwise, very early morning. Very early.

I walked for 50 minutes at the track today. According to Dr Weil, walking is the one exercise (and fast walking, not strolling) that normalizes your system because that is what we were designed to do.

Yup, I think I'll hit the treadmill now that we're talking about it. It sounds so good. (how funny it's not food we're talking about making me hungry....we're talking about exercise making me want to do that - I'm so impressionable, I guess)

Talking Time to add some controversy........

Second, because walking is no longer necessary, we the general, inclusive we, not necessarily the Vibram-clad elite have forgotten how, when, where, and why to walk. Our technique is shot, we lack proper scope (a mile sounds daunting), we dont even think to make time for regular walking for walkings sake, and walking is seen as the last resort to be employed only when the tires busted, the train isnt running, or the bus is late. Kids dont walk home from school anymore, people hop in the car to run down to the corner market.

Kenyan mud reveals that hominids have been using essentially the same feet and the same stride for hundreds of thousands of years. That means that before our big complex brains hit the scene, the same feet you enjoy today were stomping mud and carrying our distant ancestors around. These feet are millions of years in the making. Id say thats a pretty good track record, and I think itd be a shame if you didnt utilize them.

Despite it being our birthright and really healthy and all that jazz, many of us would be well served with some walking technique tips. Note that I dont condone the usage of bulky, heel-centric shoes, so all technique tips given assume that you are barefoot or in minimalist shoes with minimal to zero heel drop. Sorry, but thats just how I roll.

I absolutely love walking. I take my dog for a walk every night and it's perfect for relaxing and winding down after a day of work. It's so peaceful and I get home tired and am ready for bed!
