Default Vitamin E and Advanced Prostate Cancer

Quote:
In a prospective study involving 35,242 men, results indicate that long-term vitamin E supplementation may be associated with a lower risk for advanced prostate cancer. Long-term (past 10 years) vitamin E and selenium supplement use was assessed using a detailed questionnaire at baseline.

During 2-4 years of follow-up, 830 new cases of prostate cancer were identified. 10-year average intakes of at least 400 IU/day supplemental vitamin E or more than 50 mug/day selenium were not significantly associated with prostate cancer risk.

However, a significant inverse association was observed between long-term vitamin E supplementation and risk of advanced prostate cancer (regionally invasive or distant metastatic).

10-year average intake of at least 400 IU/day supplemental vitamin E was associated with a 57% reduced risk of advanced prostate cancer, compared to no intake of vitamin E supplements.

Thus, the results of this study suggest that long-term supplementation with vitamin E may lower risk of advanced prostate cancer in men.
