The Herb That Could Replace 30% Of Psychiatric Drugs?
Chris Kilham, The Medicine Hunter who specialises in investigating worldwide plants used in improving health problems talks about one of his favorite herbs.
Note: If you have a medical condition (especially anxiety or manic/bipolar disorders), are pregnant, lactating, trying to conceive, under the age of 18, or taking medications, consult your healthcare professional before using this product.
Thanks for the link to the herb, I'm going to check it out.

Besides checking out the other experts on herbs, I always like to check out what consumers say about the effects good/bad. Iherb usually has a good selection of consumer comments, these are the comments on the Jarrow Rhodiola Rosea link.
Rhodiola potency is measured in rosavins and Jarrow appear to be have the highest amount at 5%. Some people may get effective response at lower amounts of rosavin in other brands.
I picked up some yesterday at the vitamin store, they didn't have the Jarrow brand, but there were two brands that were comparable.
I went with Nature's Answer, liquid herbal capsules. They cost $17+ for 90. They are stadardized to contain 5% Rosavins, 12.6mg.
Serving size is 2 capsules, which equals 252mg. I read that it's recommended to start out with 100mg, then build up to 400mg if desired. Yesterday my husband and I only took one capsule.
Side effects I would want to avoid are nervousness, heart palpitations, etc. We'll do the lower dose for a couple of days, then go to two capsules.
Here's an article on advantages and side effects. That's always good to start of low and work up on dosages on any new herb or supplement.
Its very good for nervousness under stress generally, also at times when you need to be alert making you alert and more energetic this why its best taken first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. Russian athletes take it for the Olympic Games.
Only people who need to check with their doctor before taking are those being treated for bipolar (or mania) and high blood pressure symptoms.
I hope it doesn't become too popular, or it will become an endangered species like goldenseal. If it is best when grown in Siberia, it won't be too plentiful.

Ya, it would be a terrible thing for people to get off of psychotropic drugs and onto something natural.

It would most probably be hard to woo people away from pharmaceuticals due to their instant relief, and damned the side effects. There are other drugs that will "fix" the side effects.
The problem would be that this rhodiola become popular for the wrong purposes. Being pessimistic, it would not surprise me that people will misuse the herb, by taking too much, then the FDA will step in and really mess things up.
