\r\n \r\n Since a teenager I have had rather terrible anxiety: racing thoughts, gastro problems every day, OCD issues, touchy temper, etc.
\nAccording to blood, urine, and saliva tests done about a year ago, I have low serotonin and very high cortisol levels and I need to bring them back to normal.
\nI\'ve gone to numerous therapists, and phychiatists, and taken countless SSRI\'s and Benzos with no success. I try eating healthy to get the vitamins and nutrients everyone needs. When I say "healthy" I am saying I try to eat these daily/weekly: fish, various types of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fibers, healthy oils, etc. I try to vary my diet to get different nutrients constantly. My family has a garden at home so some of my vegetables are home grown, otherwise I try to shop at whole/organic foods stores when possible.
\n
\nI\'m not going to mention which medications I\'ve taken and I\'ve recently decided to stop taking any, period. Plus, even with health insurance the cost of doc visits and medication gets pricy for dealing with very little if any anxiety support and too many side effects.
\n
\n
\n
\nAs far as supplements/vitamins here\'s what I\'ve tried and their comments. I try to take new supplements for at least 2 or 3 months before seeing if they have any effect.
\n
\n
\nVit-B complex x 2/day: I think it helps. I feel it supports energy, especially in long or intense activity.
\n
\n
\nKavinace: Definintely helps temporarily but gets expensive
\n
\n
\nCalm-PRT: Definintely helps temporarily but gets expensive
\n
\n
\nGABA-plus with Inositol and Niacinamide: taken at night, sleep well and have odd but not bad dreams
\n
\n
\nAshwaganda extract: seems to help overall mood and energy
\n
\n
\nReishi mushroom capsule: seems to help overall mood and energy
\n
\n
\n5-HTP x 1/day: seems to boost mood. took 4 after quitting Effexor XR a few weeks ago and got extremely nausiated for about a day...had to miss work
\n
\n
\nPassionflower, skullcap, valerian, lemonbalm herb tea: calms the body and helps with the anxiety symptoms but not completely. definitely helps to relax and sleep
\n
\n
\nCaffeine: actually helps me when i\'m not feel inundated with anxiety symptoms. I love strong, homemade coffee which is partially what makes me feel good.
\n
\nGreen tea: loose leaf oolong and other Chinese teas. makes me nervous some times in a tense situation but at the same time is calming.
\n
\nKava Kava: recently started taking this once every morning. I seem to feel very good in the morning recently so this may be working.
\n
\nPrebiotic & Probiotic capsule: seems to balance my stomach a bit more than usual
\n
\n

\nThe following vitamins/supplements I am still taking just to supplement my diet and are good to take, especially for an anxiety sufferer from what I know:

\nHoly Basil Extract
\nNAC: was prescribed by a Functional Medicine Doc to rid my body of possible contaminants. not sure if it did anything or not.

\nKeeping busy is about the only thing that allows me to unfocus from my anxiety symptoms and be happy and relaxed.
\nYoga helps for that 1 hr of practicing it but after that the symptoms are all back.
\nMassages help for about a day or so.
\nI do aromatherapy at home which helps for a short period of time.
\n
\nAny comments and/or support is much appreciated! My anxiety is here with me every day and is extremely hard to live with. I have a vast knowledge now of foods and supplements and have tried practically everything and would love to feel the best I can make myself feel.\r\n

\nTheanine is also good for stress/anxiety. A good quality Omega 3 fish oil is good to take. I see you\'re taking some already, but it should be in the natural triglyceride form, I use NOW brand liquid lemon flavored.

\r\nAlong with all of my tests, I also had a toxicity and vitamin/mineral check. My magnesium levels are fine, not that extra wouldn\'t be beneficial. I\'ll look into all that you mention.\r\n

The test mentioned is not only a test for heavy metals but a test of whether you have your minerals in balance. Copper is not a toxin but an essential mineral which when not bound adequately by an enzyme, metallothionein,can collect in the brain and could cause most of your symptoms you quote including racing thoughts, stomach problems,OCD and temper problems.

\nCoffee and chocolate cravings are also classic signs of high copper levels.
\n
\nBlood tests for vitamins, minerals and toxins are useless for finding out what is actually happening in the tissues and organs. The body is constantly regulating the blood to maintain homeostasis and will dump any excess minerals and heavy metals into the tissues . This is why a tissue mineral analysis test is the best way to ascertain what minerals and vitamins are actually out of balance.

I completely agree about the office lifestyle, but unfortunately having a degree in engineering it isn\'t possible or easy to find a job that\'s not in an office. It\'s definitely something to think about though. Also, I\'m someone who really enjoys to be active, so sitting and being sedentary at work is like prison to me. I do try to get up quite often and take a little walk in the office but for those 8 hours it\'s not easy to keep sane. And throughout the past year my anxiety and symptoms have been so bad and leaving me with such little energy and drive that I don\'t feel like engaging in physical activity in my free time. Luckily I have a very high metabolism and am still somehow physically fit.

\nYes, I\'ve tried yoga, massage, and some forms of meditation. All of which do work in the time they\'re occuring and for a short time after, but the anxiety symptoms return quickly. I know that doing those practices often may lower my anxiety overall slowly so I should do them more often to help.\r\n

High cortisol means the body is in a \'fight or flight\' mode and you appear to be stuck in it. An HTMA is the only way to ascertain what is going on at the cellular level regarding your adrenals and minerals which are abnormal when stress hormones like cortisol are elevated.

\nPeople in \'fight or flight\' mode for long times, due to ongoing stress or some high body inflammation, lose magnesium which can cause energy depletion.

\nYou can try a Mag supplement for a month and see if it helps, but I still think you should have an HTMA test. Your CRP level(which is a measure of bodily inflammation) is 300% over the max which needs lowering quickly and mag will help,but I still feel you need an HTMA test to get a bigger picture of whats going on besides the high cortisol.

\nThanks for pointing out the CRP; there\'s so much to know and I had no idea that the high CRP meant any of that, I really had no idea what it was so I always looked right over it. It sounds like there\'s something inflamed that\'s causing the high CRP. I think it\'s worth trying the mag supplement for a month and see if it makes me feel any different.

\nAbout the benzos; there was a period of about a year where I was going religiously to a psych which kept trying different benzos. I truthfully don\'t remember if I was prescribed smaller doses to detox off of them correctly or not. It\'s been about 2 years since I last took a benzo.
\nI did "detox" myself off of the Effexor XR with smaller doses, prozac, and 5-HTP and had withdrawl "brain shocks" for over a month afterwards. It\'s been fine ever since.\r\n

\r\n \r\n So I went last week to Pittsburgh Alternative Health, and found out via urine and saliva samples plus blood examination that my body is extremely acidic and lacking minerals because of that, which is most likely cauing my anxiety and other sympoms. I\'ve been given supplements for minerals, probiobic, blood detox, antioxidant drink mix, and was told to drink lemon water using distilled water to detox and move my body\'s pH to be more alkaline. Also to change my diet away from acidic food & drink and to follow food guidelines for my A- blood type.
\nSo far there hasn\'t been any noticeable results and I don\'t expect it to work instantly. I go back in a week or so to see if anything has changed. I\'ll report my findings.\r\n

\r\n \r\n I started living alone a few months after a breakup with my girlfriend whom I lived with for a few months, and the anxiety is better since I am no longer confronted with her ways of life and home that I did not agree with and caused me extra anxiety.
\nMy anxiety symptoms are still prevalent, even though taking a month or so of the minerals and supplements recommended by the alternative health doc. The main symptoms that are troublesome are the racing thoughts, extreme lethargy after work in the afternoon until I take a nap to rejuvenate, OCD thoughts and hand/body picking and constant gastrointestinal issues. I try to eat whole foods as much as possible and try to stay away from caffeine and processed foods. I take good probiotics every day along with vitamin C (1000mg 2 x a day) and fish oil (~800 EPA, DHA daily) + GABA (1 capsule) before bed. I\'ve been sleeping very well, which has changed within the past few years so I feel that some things I\'ve done have definitely changed something in me for the better since I can fall asleep much easier and stay asleep.
\nI drink loose leaf green tea almost every day, especially at work, along with occassional fresh ground dark roast decaf coffee.

\nOccassionally I make passionflower tea if I\'m having a bad episode, which has been rare.

\nI\'ve since gone to my primary care physician and asked for any tests to diagnose my symptoms. No foods are noticeably causing any issues but they did a food allergy blood test and all came out negative. He thought it may be IBS, and gave me meds for that, which I took for a few weeks and caused hardcore diarrahea which I could not deal with and is probably not healthy, so I stopped them. It did not change my symptoms although I\'m sure it may have taken a few more weeks/months to work. I\'m pretty sure my IBS symptoms are due to the anxiety, which does run in my family.

\nI researched about the gluten and I\'m still not sure if that\'s an issue with me or not, according to the test results.

\nI took the month-long prescription for the H-Pylori and nothing changed with me as far as symptoms.

\n28 yrs old male, 6\'2" 180 lbs.
\nI do not exercise intensely but am always busy and moving, rarely sit other than at my engineering office job.
\nMy metabolism is very high. I am hungry a lot and I eat smaller meals usually and items throughout the day like crackers, cheese, yogurt, vegetables, fruit, nuts, grain bars, etc. I try to eat all whole foods but it\'s nearly impossible with how much I need to eat, especially while at work where I don\'t have much time.

Just been reviewing the whole thread and as mentioned initially, your high copper level is most likely to be the main problem. High copper agitates the mind and can also cause OCD symptoms as well as lethargy. The stomach issues could also be due to high copper as the body tends to cause \'copper dumping\' when there is an excessive build up in the tissues and organs which can also cause IBS. Type A blood also tends to lead to higher copper levels.

\nHigh copper is probably also responsible for your low Histamine which in turn causes lowered transmitters including serotonin. Copper also depletes zinc which could be responsible for your borderline high pyrolluria.

If your going to get your histamine and neurotransmitter levels up its essential to eat higher protein foods such as beef which is also high in zinc which can help to balance the high copper level. Nuts and seeds that your eating at the moment are a very high copper foods especially if they are cashews and sesame seeds.

\nDetoxing heavy metals like copper can only be carried out effectively if your adrenals and liver are in good condition. If they are not the copper will just be moved around. Have you had your CRP and cortisol levels checked recently?

\nWith the amount of stress which you appear to have been under, whether its job stress or for some other reason, the state of the adrenals can only be asessed by a hair mineral test which shows how the adrenals are regulating the sodium and potassium levels.

Anyone who has grey or white hair is copper deficient. Anyone who has crows feed around their eyes is copper deficient. There is more people copper deficient that are unaware of it. The people who die from aneurysms died from a copper deficiency, Copper and iron work together to eliminate each other. also vitamin C will eliminate copper.

If your going for a hair mineral test Analytical Research Laboratories is the best one to use.The Health Practitioner I linked to has had a lot of experience with metals and their effects on the mind and you can get advice all the time after getting the results and recommended protocol.

\nOn some sites I have been on, people have been to naturopaths who have had hair tests done at laboratories who dont give an interpretation of the results, just mineral levels. The naturopath has not got the expertise himself to know what to properly recommend which ends up being a waste of time and money.

If your going for a hair mineral test Analytical Research Laboratories is the best one to use.The Health Practitioner I linked to has had a lot of experience with metals and their effects on the mind and you can get advice all the time after getting the results and recommended protocol.

On some sites I have been on, people have been to naturopaths who have had hair tests done at laboratories who dont give an interpretation of the results, just mineral levels. The naturopath has not got the expertise himself to know what to properly recommend which ends up being a waste of time and money.
