\r\n \r\n I only do the 3 year rabbies as well. When I\'m at the vet\'s and they ask me about all the shots I tell them we\'ve already done it and I did them when I was out of town with my dog. I just don\'t want to get in an argument about how I believe my dog only needs the rabbies vaccines. I\'m actually against it every 3 years, because studies are showing they last 7 years. They were showing studies that they believe it will last 15 years, but the law at least where I live is every 3 years.

I believe it is also similar with heartworm medication. My two spotted dogs get a pill everyday. There is no question that a heartworm infection can be fatal for a dog.
\nNow I can understand if you are in an area that has lots of mosquito’s that there is a possibility that few might carry the disease. And if your dog is outside a lot that some of them might bit your animal and that their immune system might not be up to the task of fighting off these “bugs”, thus the heartworm medication gives them added immunity.

\nHowever after the mosquito season as pasted and plus a couple months have pasted allowing the heartworm medication to kill any remaining “bugs” why is it necessary to continue throughout the winter? Is it really beneficial for the dog to be continually on this medication or does it just benefit the vet’s bottom line.

\nThe bison frise almost DIED after a round of vaccs a couple years ago. My daughter\'s poodle mix is going on 13 years old - so we are vacc free. YAY!

\nJust my opinion, but the constant push to medicate pets: MARKETING - plain and simple. Get your pet this med, that med, this vac, etc. M A R K E T I N G.

\nMy three previous vets were owned by the manufacturers of pet meds. Every pen/pencil, pad of paper, etc had the logo. And I was told to get every imaginable shot and drug. For a couch sitting yorkie and bischon? Well, they might drink a puddle. Or eat a rabid animal.

\nWe do titers (blood work).
\n
\nWe feed them a raw diet and small bits of organic berries - maybe.
\n
\nNo flea/tick treatments. No chemicals in their bath soap. Organic bedding. Lots of fresh air and sun. Running after squirrel/birds in the back yard.\r\n

How wonderful that the media is focusing on how well vaccinated children are managing against one child that was not who is thought to now have HepA. Wouldn\'t HOW the berries became contaminated be the MOST IMPORTANT?! NO. Vaccinated children are doing much better against ONE KID that wasn\'t. How was this ever calculated? Perhaps there are 40,000 unvaccinated kids that didn\'t get sick! They hurriedly looked into the shot records of all the kids?

\r\n \r\n Being the bitter non trusting soul anymore, after my experience with a small animal hospital and my yorkie - I believe they push all the drugs for money. Greed. It may have begun as concern for the animal way back when. Perhaps in school. Many truly wanted to help the animals.

\n As pet owner, one puts their faith and trust in the DOCTOR - who, imo, is blindly led by the marketing campaigns. Do they do any research into the drugs/meds to discover if they truly work? IS there actual unbiased/true independent testing done?

\nWhat are they blaming the alarming and climbing rates of cancer in dogs on? Too much beer? Cigarettes? Toxic chemicals at work?

\nCould it be the bogus food marketed as healthy "diets" along with the many, many vaccinations and daily meds to combat the diseases caused by the phoney foods?

\nMy dogs do calm down with homeopathy. Even stop scratching with the remedy for Allergies. I believe there may be a cure for the allergic one with homeopathic remedies and herbal tinctures. CURE.

\nI no longer want to manage the problems/illnesses. I want them to be gone.

\nThe last time I took the two to the vet for their check-up and tests, I walked away with bills totaling over $450. And a yorkie that could not breath. Unbeknownst to me, he was in dire shape with an 80% collapsed trachea, and all I was given was an appt to bring him back to this vet to have his trachea xrayed. Couldn\'t do it that day, for it was not working. She didn\'t refer me to another place to get him cared for. She just let me leave the office. I had NO idea what was wrong with him. NONE. Did not realize how serious his condition was until the next morning and he was still coughing/gasping and I was on my one hour trek to the emergency vet. Who then referred me to the small animal hospital two hours away at a university.

\nYou cannot truly diagnose collapsed trachea with an xray. You need a fluoroscope. Ted\'s overnight stay (with his little oxygen cage, his drip and the monitors beeping), tests, oxygen and MASSIVE amounts of meds cost over $2000. Then the many visits after his release the next day. (He was released sooner than they desired for he would not calm down). I spent the night in the family room sleeping next to his cage praying his little airway would open just a bit. Within two days, he was breathing without strain. I turned down the surgery to have a stent placed in his airway, due to the high numbers of the stent migrating into the lungs. His collapse was quite far down.

\nThat was October, 2011. He\'s doing pretty well, considering. We limit his time outdoors in the heat. He sleeps with a mini fan near. He was put on a diet of raw chicken patties and lost three pounds w/o exercise - since he cannot walk/run without coughing. He is walked in a stroller with his buddies and he is fine. A bit more work on his owners, but he is active, he is healthy, he is a wonderful companion. For as long as I can keep him healthy.

\nSell sell sell. The vet hospital has ALOT of support - financial - by the makers of dog medicines/foods. They pushed a healthy diet food on me which I refused. I informed my vet I will look into raw. Healthy organic supplements. SHe was still having injections put into the poor dog while we were getting into the car!!?! He looked dead with his tongue hanging out of his mouth and eyes rolled back. I cried the 3-1/2 hours home while my daughter drove. GOD. That was a nightmare.

\nAs for flea/ticks? I have an organic spray for them by Dr. Mercola. I also purchased a garlic spray for the lawn that has worked. I usually find one or two fleas on them each summer. Since using the lawn spray - ZERO. NONE. (High amount of squirrels, birds and bunnies, too seem to be pleased \r\n

\r\n \r\n Nematodes are great for all larveez, right? We have tons of Grubs. Been meaning to do that for the last year or so and I get all caught up in the veggie growing.

\nIt can be the soon-to-be-ex\'s little project. (Our lawn looks awful. I just don\'t have the desire. I will mow, edge, rake - but that is it)

\n I will be paying homeowners fees soon, for lawn care/shoveling/etc. I will also rent some dirt to grow my veggies in from the town. There is a neighborhood project going on there and I can\'t wait to get to meet some people!! Drove by when house hunting and there were all these farmers. I asked the agent and he said you rent the amount you need and can grow veggies/fruits. Loves it. Just a couple blocks away, too. (From my soon to be new place)
