Default Magnesium 101

Generally what it does in the body.

The nasty things that can happen when you have low levels.
Good pointers despite the lecturer running out of board space.

I refer to her book The Magnesium Miracle quite often.
Magnesium is so important, yet so overlooked. I wonder why?
Good post!

Magnesium
This mineral is required by over 300 enzymes for energy metabolism. Magnesium is also involved in body temperature control, making protein from amino acids and transporting messages through nerves to the muscles. Together with calcium, phosphorous, Vitamin D and other nutrients, magnesium helps keep bones healthy.

Conditions that may be helped: Osteoporosis, PMS and menopausal symptoms, diabetes, fatigue, weakness, irritability, sleep problems, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, headaches.

Depleted by: Alcohol, phytic acid in whole grains, large quantities of fluoride or zinc, diuretics, ERT; refining foods removes magnesium.

Deficiency signs: Tremors, confusion, irregular heartbeat, depression, irritability.

Toxicity signs: No known toxicity (unless you have kidney disease or possibly certain types of bone tumors or cancers).

Food sources: Peanuts, lentils, split peas, tofu, wheat germ, banana, oatmeal, wild rice, bean sprouts, almonds, chicken, spinach, beef, salmon, nuts.

Herbal sources: Licorice, kelp, nettles, horsetail, oatstraw, evening primrose.

I've seen the second video before, and agree with most of what he says.

The lady in the first video makes alot of sense, especially when she says we need a calcium to magnesium ratio of 1:1, not more calcium and less magnesium.

One thing she says that I disagree with is that calcium is the antagonist of magnesium. The proper way to state this would be to say magnesium regulates calcium, which means you need at least as much magnesium as calcium in your diet.

Positive and negative are antagonist of each other, however one does not regulate the other.

Since most people take in much more calcium than magnesium, they end up with two problems. First they become magnesium deficient, and second, the excess calcium ends up in the arteries and soft tissues such as the heart or brain, instead of the teeth and bones where it is needed.

If you supplement with calcium, you must also supplement with magnesium of at least the same amount.

Nutritional Adjuncts to the Fat-Soluble Vitamins Written by Christopher Masterjohn
This is a recent article explaining the relatinship of magnesium to Fat soluble vitamins.

I think we also tend to forget that humans evolved nearer the Equator in East Africa where the difference between day and night is more pronounced and when we didn't have access to light at night. We evolved with our DNA set to produce Vitamin D from dawn to dusk and Melatonin from dusk to dawn and this impacts on the circadian rhythm of every cell in our body.
Magnesium depletion with hypo- or hyper- function of the biological clock may be involved in chronopathological forms of asthma
Understanding how variations in magnesium levels may fluctuate through the day may affect other systems such a blood pressure and heart rhythm particularly in those people who are not taking effective amounts of magnesium. (or vitamin D3)

Magnesium oil from the Norwegian Zechstein field is good for lowering heavy metals, cadmium, mercury and lead. Its cheaper to buy the Mag flakes and make up the oil by just adding spring water ( 50/50 mixture) for use in a spray all over the body.

I find this interesting as well. My naturopathic doctor had recommended magnesium to try and help my asthma, which tends to act up at night before I go to sleep. In all honestly, it hasn't really made an impact on my asthma, but it does help a bit with falling asleep, so I have continued taking it.

Yes it's possible to get higher doses of mg via transdermal application than it is using oral methods and without the possile side effects. It's more direct and goes straight into the blood stream, particularily useful if you have muscle pain as can be applied directly to the correct area. Ancient minerals have a very good quality range that I personally use.
