Cirrhosis of the Liver


Description

Cirrhosis of the liver is considered a chronic disease. It is recognized by the degeneration and hardening of liver cells. This type of scarring of the liver tissue causes improper functioning of this valuable, hard working organ which aids in cleansing and filtering the blood of toxins which enter the body from the intake of foods, medicines and chemicals. The liver is the largest of the body's internal organs.


Causes and Symptoms

This liver disease may result from alcoholism, malnutrition, viral hepatitis or chronic imflammation of liver ducts. Early signs include fever, indigestion, diarrhea or constipation and jaundice. Symptoms which can occur later in the disease are edema, anemia, and bleeding disorders. Sufferers often show a deficiency of b-complex vitamins, vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin K.

Optimal nutrition is the key to recovery from this disease. A common complication of cirrhosis is the failure of the liver to make vitamins available in an active form in the body.
