This is So Frustrating

I hate trying to get in to see a doctor these days. I search and search and search and think I find a good one, then I go in, and they're like rude or they don't listen at all. Does anyone else have this happen to them a lot? I would like to get into a doctor soon with my issues, but I was with my husband and child to see a practitioner today and he was like so rude! I don't even want to go in December, but I'm not sure I can find anything until then. I'm always afraid of doctors not taking me seriously and that's exactly what I witnessed happen to my husband today.

I'm even more frustrated I can't afford a holistic doctor :( why does this have to be so hard?!

Sorry you're having such problems. Honestly, I rarely ever go to the doctors, and definitely haven't gone since the coronavirus. I use Kaiser Permanente, so when I did see a doctor, since I don't go often, it was usually a different one. I have no real health issues, so the normal 'check up' and blood work is about it. If one was being rude to me, I'd have to say something to bring it to their attention. Would be nice to use a holistic doctor, but I imaging they are very expensive and their 'prescriptions' would be too. I use a lot of herbs and vitamins at home, and they are very pricey.....but have avoided needing any prescription drugs, so it's okay.

The holistic doctors are all at least an hour and a half away from here and the better ones are three hours away. Of course it's mostly out of pocket - initial visit is usually $150 - $300 and then a smaller fee under that like $75 - $100 for followups. I would assume my insurance would cover most lab tests, but it's still more than I can reasonably afford out of pocket. Some supplements I'm sure would be affordable, but some other therapies - not so much. It would be a shame to take the time, go, and not be able to afford treatment. It's true a lot of high quality "organic" or "bioavailable" supplements are expensive...it's not uncommon to pay $40 or $50 for a one month supply :(

I'm too nervous to confront a doctor about being rude. A lot of them seem to feel that they are right because they're the one with the big, fancy degree and I'd rather not challenge. I'll play stupid, usually, and of course continue to be polite, but I can generally tell when they're trying to walk all over me and do not care so I'll simply cancel my appointment or not make another one and move onto a different provider.

This provider was openly in disagreement with our wishes and seemed extremely interested with pressing heavier medications without using lighter alternatives first. He asked about my husband's diet and we follow closest to a paleo diet and he explained low carb, low sugar, etc., but was still struggling with his health and the provider flat out shamed him saying he needs to stop eating all the high carb junk so he can lose some weight...he didn't even listen. He gave him a medication that was known to cause kidney problems without doing any bloodwork or anything to confirm he didn't have organ issues. My husband said he'll probably get the labs done because then they'll be available on his personal portal directly from the lab and then drop the provider. My husband struggles with his help, but the fat shaming among doctors is real. I didn't realize how many doctors were that way until I started going to my husband's doctor appointments.

I found a clinic that takes my insurance, not a holistic place, but I think it might be worth a try. I will see if I can get a call through tomorrow for an appointment. I've been having so many issues with pain over where my liver/gallbladder and now spleen are. Left shoulder pain is happening now, too. I'm so scare for my health. If I just know what this is then I think I'll feel a lot more informed. A lot of doctors shrug me off because I don't look ill and look healthy and fit.

I set up a free liver scan in another city and if I do have a liver problem they said that one of their providers would take me on and help me out. I hope they take my insurance, but the initial scan and reading is free so if I could at least determine the health of my liver that's one step to see if there's anything goig on there. I guess we have to pay for the gas to get there, but that's more minimal than paying for a whole fancy scan. That's later in December, though, kind of hope it comes soon.

Ideally, I wouldn't want to even step foot in a doctor's office during the pandemic and because it's flu season on top of that, I don't want to be getting sick. Normally if I don't feel ill, I'll avoid the doctor at all costs lol. There may be times where I feel I should go and just be sure things are okay, but otherwise nah. Generally doctors are a last resort for me.

I've used holistic doctors for a few decades, but I had a nice job that let me not worry about the price. Yes, expensive. And yet, there was not one of them that diagnosed the cause of my conditions. I was always left disappointed. It's hard to tell too much with just symptoms. I hope you can find a specialist doctor who can diagnose properly.

Meanwhile, try drinking roasted dandelion root tea, or even capsules. It's easy to find. It's commonly called Detox tea. That tea normally also has ginger in it. Dandelion root is known for clearing toxins in the liver and gall bladder. Also very delicious. Add honey if you wish. Honey is antibacterial, antifungal, and even antiviral.

I'm sorry to hear that even the holistic doctors were not able to figure out the cause of your ailments :( that's always disappointing, especially when paying an arm and a leg for their care.

The one time I tried a "natural" doctor, he was a conventional doctor that would start with natural remedies, but didn't strike me as a total naturopath. The visit had a high co-pay like $75, but that was better than $400, but it was me, my husband, and my daughter at the time so it added up. Then the labs were not covered by insurance - it would've been a couple thousand out of pocket. We just couldn't.

I am hoping that I can get a proper diagnosis, too. Lately I have been feeling a lot better after drinking the dandelion root tea for a week or so so I'm thinking it's liver/gall bladder. It makes a world of difference - there's a good reason people suggest this often! It works! I will keep using it for my pain. Today is the first day I have been 100% pain free so I will continue. I made sure to grab one extra box while at the store last time. I am not sure if the one I have actually has ginger in it, I think it might be all dandelion root, but I will have the check that now. We have a ginger/turmeric tea, too, if I need that.

The taste of dandelion root tea makes me want to gag, but I hate bitter - it's a hard flavor for me to get over, but I'll put a little bit of honey and a couple of star anise in it to take that edge off. I'll drink it anyway because the benefits are too good not to. Love that we have a good little food co-op that I can get raw honey from.

Thanks :)

You don't like dandelion root. I'm the same way with cilantro. Not gag, but highly distasteful. Cilantro is a great herb and one of a few capable of passing the blood brain barrier. My grief is that I live in the Austin Texas area. Cilantro is in most Texmex dishes. I'm trying to get over it. If it's in capsules then no problem.

Dandelion root is definitely nasty. I wish I loved it, but I still drink it.

I have a love/hate with cilantro. It's okay in some dishes, but if I order carne asada, I usually say to hold the pico...sometimes they add way too much cilantro. It definitely has this strange flavor about it.
