Horsetail for Osteoporosis

Thanks for the links for the vitamin testing. The first link involves answering health questions and testing twice a year--it sounds like they are going to do a study so it goes on for 5 years. The second link sounds easier to do.

Arrowwind, I'm also wondering why you do not recommend Carlson's brand. I have their fish ol, cod liver oil and the vitamin D. Was the reason you did not rec. their vit D due to the fact it doesn't come in the mega doses....?

Dr Mercola promoted Carlsons for a long time and now he has changed his mind and I just can't remember what the issue was there. If you go to his site you can probably find out.

I tried to raise my D level with fishoil Vit. D supplements and they did not work at taking the 2,000 IU that was recommended at the time.

Carlson Brand

I just tried to search his site for negative comments regarding Carlson brand supplements, and all I could find was praise and recommendations from Mercola.

I don't know how much respect I have for Mercola's comments on anything so far, from the bit I've looked at, he seems very flighty and wishy-washy on many things. If he were to go against a brand like Carlson, I'd be suspicious that he had a hidden agenda.

I presently use Carlson Fish Oil, and Vitamin D3, and will keep buying the brand unless good reason not to has been provided from a good source.

Can take this with Strontium Citrate? Anyone get any negative side effects while trying this? Also how does it effect the hormonal system?

If you use the Osteo-Mins AM (one of the products that is recommended) it already contains 500 mg. of strontium per serving----2 capsules. It also contains zinc, selenium, copper, manganese, molybdenum, boron, and silicon.

I just ordered some stuff from iherb. My mom has osteoporosis, so I ordered some horsetail tea (is this good?) and some ionic fizz magnesium packets. Tastes like shit, but it is a great Mg supplement. A buddy of mine was totally stressed out, could not sleep, so I mailed an ionic fizz Mg packet. He said he slept 9 hrs straight after drinking it and felt much better the next day.

If you are going to use horsetail I recommend that you read the whole article. I will not go through it again. You need a very specific product and it is all explained already.

Thanks Arrow, for posting this article. It helps me to know that
going to the trouble of grinding my flax seed daily is worth it. I
can't handle the Flaxseed Oil - toooooo oily for me. Also, I'm
wondering if the silica in the D-Earth I'm using almost daily, is
part of the reason too, plus 4000 of Vit D3 daily, that my bone
density results were so good.

Hi arrowwind09. you mentioned that the aqueous extraction process involved in vegetal silica and alta silica neutralizes the alkaloids in horsetail. I ordered both silica complex 500 mg from Iherb (manufactured by Now Foods) and Vegetal Silica from the same website (the same silica you are using i believe) and i was wondering if the silica from Now foods may have a chance of containing alkaloids and if I should just stick to the Vegetal silica just to be safe.

Oh and is the aqueous process meant to neutalize the alkaloids or just provide a non chemical method of extraction?

I would try to contact NOW foods and find out if they have done any extraction method to deal with the alkaloids. I just don't know about that product.

And I can't answer wether the alkaloids or neutralized or extracted.

Thanks arrowwind09. I have never smoked before nor had any nicotine substances in my body before so I guess you can say I'm a bit paranoid about alkaloids.

Anyone considering an order from IHerb should note their NOW brand
vit D3 5000IU for $8.80 for 120 softgel capsules, if you want/need
Vit D3. Plus, I think they give a discount for any orders over $60.00
and even higher discounts for larger amounts spent.

I would not recommend taking baking soda on a regular basis to change the internal ph. It will disrupt digestive function and when that happens you will loose lots of nutrients.

The best way to get your self more alkaline is to eat lots of veggies, drink green drinks, cut back on processed foods and especially soda pop. One can of soda can make you acidic for days.

I've recently learned that bamboo extract is a powerful supplier of silica. Horse tail provides about 8% silica where bamboo provides 70%. It has been used for ages in oriental medicine. If you are doing an osteoporosis nutritional program this may be the way to go, requiring much less capsules per day. likely 2 or 4 capsules (depending on your product selection) instead of 16 in the first weeks.
