Acupuncture may help with tinnitus

Published: Jan. 12, 2008 at 12:36 AM

ANN ARBOR, Mich., Jan. 12 (UPI) -- Acupuncture and trigger point therapy may be effective treatments for people suffering from tinnitus -- a ringing in the ears -- a U.S. study found.

Susan Shore of the University of Michigan's Kresge Hearing Research Institute said nerves that "sense touch" in the face and neck may be behind the ringing that people with tinnitus hear.

The study, published online in the European Journal of Neuroscience, said touch-sensing nerve cells step up their activity in the brain after hearing cells are damaged, and hyperactivity of these touch-sensing neurons likely plays an important role in tinnitus.

The research findings were made in studies involving animals, but the research suggests treatments such as acupuncture -- if used to target nerves in the head and neck -- may provide relief for some people plagued by tinnitus.

someone should let Captain Kirk know about this. He got a very bad case of tinnitus after filming Arena. The explosions happened near him.. and he noticed some ringing, but didn't think much about it. but it got worse and worse. He's tried several therapies for it.

here is the scene... (another ensign hits the dust.. dangerous to beam down to a planet with Captain Kirk :p) the explosions start happening at the beginning, but the ones that happen right next to Kirk are about 3:47 into the video:

MC, I know you wanted to know all about this... :coffee::thumbsup:

The Lucas tribute was very funny. :) I'm sure It was a Very Good Year will haunt my dreams. Thanks, ST. Thanks a lot. :p

I'm saving Rocket Man for tomorrow. Three Shatner videos is my limit.

Whaaaaaa? William Shatner admitted that he’s never watched Star Trek!
The 76-year-old actor said he had seen neither the cult science-fiction television programme nor any of the films which propelled him to fame.

He said he hated watching himself perform on screen, saying “I suck”.

Speaking in an interview for his internet video blog with his daughter Lisabeth, he said: “I never watched Star Trek.

“I have not even seen any of the Star Trek movies. I don’t watch myself.
“When I direct and have to look at filmed scenes of myself, I suck.”
He said he had also not watched any of his performances playing a lawyer in Boston Legal, the television series, for which he won an Emmy and a Golden Globe award. Shatner added that he did not have any memorabilia from Star Trek either.

Harry,

Shatner is a guy that never really "got" star trek. what a representative... He never "got" science fiction (imo), even though he has written several "star trek" novellas. I think star trek was a job. but I think he has come to appreciate what star trek did for him.

as far as not wanting to watch yourself, I guess this is the way it is for some actors.. I read someone (probably on the net) that vincent d'onofrio has never watched any of his law and order shows.

but, what I like about Shatner (even if the guy doesn't get sci-fi).. is he is amazing the way he keeps recreating himself. And I like that he doesn't take himself too seriously, and he seems to be able to laugh at himself (all the way to the bank ;)).

He would probaby be fun at a party (he says people keep trying to get him to sing at parties.. HAHAHA).

hey.. what do I know? nada, zip, really.. just what I read and what i see.

but, that' my impression of Shatner.

hey, there is a new star trek movie coming out the end of 2008. I know you are waiting with bated breath, right? maybe shatner will sing on this one..

I wish I could have treated Leonard - I like the personality of the person, and I always enjoyed Mr. Spock, too!

I have treated tinnitus a few times, and found variable results. Once, a patient reported improvement in tinnitus as an inadvertent benefit of acupuncture. I think he/she wanted treatment for something else and just by chance, his/her tinnitus improved

Now that I have written that, I see that I should not treat Mr. Spock for tinnitus - the results would be too uncertain for him!

Sure you did, ST. A likely story ... :p
;)

ok.. I loaned them to him. He is 17 now... so the bears are MINE!!!! MINE MINE MINE!!!!

:p

BTW, are you planning on reading Shatner's newest autobiography? I read a recent interview with him - promoting the book.
no... I didn't even know he had come out with (another) autobiography. I read one of his books that I saw in my local library... and it was really quite entertaining.. hilarious at times. I was kind of wondering what to expect, so it was a pleasant surprise. :) (sorry, Captain Kirk :p)

I'll look for it (and put it on my book queue :()
