Thumbs up Texas Grapefruit ready for shipping in Nov.

I just got my Pittman and Davis Catalogue and ordered a 1/2 bushel
of their Ruby Red grapefruit for myself, to be shipped in November.
Yes, they're a bit costly, but they are soooo delicious that I usually
order a second half bushel in January too. My Christmas gift to myself.
To take a look at their catalogue: http://www.pittmandavis.com
I'm worth it! LOL!

Ebird,

Your post has taken me straight back to my youthful days. Back then almost everybody in the neighbourhood where I grew up had citrus trees. I remember munching(with a spoon) on the pink marsh grapefruit and eating the shadocks. Now these fruits are very hard to find. Recently I was able to get a grafted shadock plant, which I have planted. I hope that I live long enough to eat fruits from it. The shadock tree grows tall and the fruit is large. But it is not as juicy as the grapefruit.

I had a ruby red grapefruit tree when I lived in California. Sweet. I loved to eat it plain. Sometimes I would bake it. Cut in half, put a little honey on each half, bake them for about 15 minutes - just enough to make them hot. Yum. Great for breakfast. I miss that tree. I had a yellow one too. They would be so sour that I would get lock jaw.

I had a lady friend that could not eat them; because of her heart medicine. She was so disappointed. I thought she could just separate them from the medicine by about 4 hours; but her bottle label said "not at all".

Smile Grapefruit

When my Dad lived in Tampa, Fla he had both grapefruit and
orange trees in his back yard. He would bring a huge box of both
when he came to visit. I was always grateful as well as envious;
envious that all he had to do was go out in his back yard and pick
them. And such a long producing season too.
Cedy - I've never heard of shadocks; what are they?
Jim - I love to eat mine just plain; no sugar, no honey, no salt, etc.
Yep, another reason NOT to take Pharma drugs - one can't enjoy
either grapefruit or grapefruit juice. When I was put on Pharma meds
after my first heart attack, and found out no grapefruit allowed, that
was when I decided P meds weren't for me. Wasn't worth it to have to
give up one of God's greatest gifts to us.

What are shad(dd)ocks? I had to repair my time machine before I could come up with an answer.
The shadock is a citrus fruit about the size of a grapefruit. The tree grows taller than the grapefruit tree. It is light greenish in colour when not ripe.I cannot tell what colour it is when ripe because we did not give it time to get ripe. It is not as popular as other types of citrus fruits. In my youth there were trees scattered about the landscape. Now I cannot locate a single tree . You may know that navel oranges are not as juicy as other oranges and are mostly eaten instead of sucked. I would say that the shadock is slightly less juicy than the navel orange and also has to be eaten. Cut the thick, outer skin four places from top to bottom, peel off and expose the pulp. There is an inner, thinner skin that some people eat. It is removed by those who cannot eat it.

When next I go back in time I am going to try to locate a tree that is laden with fruits and stuff my gut.

Cool

Hmmmmmm! I think I'll stick with the grapefruit, both red and white. I love
both of them without any sugar, honey or sweetening of any kind.
I rarely eat Navel oranges, but when I do, I just buy them at my regular
grocery store.
