Iron Levels and Diabetes

In a study involving 360 subjects with type 2 diabetes and 758 controls, serum ferritin levels were found to be higher among cases than controls (mean in men: 96.6 ng/ml in cases vs. 67.8 ng/ml in controls; in women: 45.9 ng/ml in cases vs. 34.8 ng/ml in controls).

The risk of diabetes was found to be significantly higher among subjects with elevated levels of serum ferritin (highest quartile), as compared to subjects in the lowest quartile of serum ferritin (OR=7.4).

The authors conclude, "Serum ferritin is an important and independent predictor of the development of diabetes."
