Mangosteen & Breast Cancer

The abstract mentions breast cancer but it's possible that, if this research pans out in humans, mangosteen may have an application in combating prostate cancer as well.

Twelve xanthone constituents of the botanical dietary supplement mangosteen (the pericarp of Garcinia mangostana) were screened using a noncellular, enzyme-based microsomal aromatase inhibition assay. Of these compounds, garcinone D ( 3), garcinone E ( 5), alpha-mangostin ( 8), and gamma-mangostin ( 9) exhibited dose-dependent inhibitory activity. In a follow-up cell-based assay using SK-BR-3 breast cancer cells that express high levels of aromatase, the most potent of these four xanthones was gamma-mangostin ( 9). Because xanthones may be consumed in substantial amounts from commercially available mangosteen products, the consequences of frequent intake of mangosteen botanical dietary supplements require further investigation to determine their possible role in breast cancer chemoprevention.

I made some researches about mangosteen because I'm not familiar with this kind of fruit.. It turned out (on my researches) that a mangosteen fruit has so many benefits. I also knew that it has already been generally accepted (and widely advertised) that mangosteen extract is useful in the treatment of arthritis, acid dyspepsia, fibromylagia, moderate asthma, otitis externa and eczema. Now, the latest findings indicate that mangosteen has - in addition to its antioxidant effects - antimicrobial actions that inhibit the progression of acne. Furthermore, it is highly effective against the methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a bacterium responsible for staph infections.

I used a mangosteen extract to help manage a skin condition I used to have - a combination of eczema and psoriasis. I recounted my experience in the above link.

I think much of its benefits are due to its anti-inflammatory activity.
