Well about 70 years ago if you stop breathing you were considered dead and they used artificial resuscitation to bring you back alive 50 years ago if your heart stopped you were considered dead than they used CPR and bring them back alive. Now is your brain needs to stop working for you to be dead.
As far as the heart stopping they do that for people with A-Fib and they hope when they restart the heart it will be back in rhythm.
