Default Failed Gum Graft

I have never had teeth issues. However, over the years, I have been encouraged to get a gun graft due to some recession on my teeth. After continual encouragement to get this done, I opted to have it done by my dentist. After the procedure, my gums were swollen and my mouth was sore. The tissue, taken from the roof of my mouth, remained white and began to show signs of infection ( yellow ) around the outside of the grafted tissue. The next day a piece of the grafted tissue was missing and the stitches appeared to be torn. I went back into my dentist and he said it failed. He removed the tissue. I have two questions. 1) how often do these fail? 2) my recession now appears to be worse - I was informed it would tighten up and reform to my teeth back to my normal before the graft. Is this accurate? Thank you!
