Abnormal Pap-Smears Linked to Low B-12
Quote:
In a case-control study involving 103 women with abnormal pap smears (cervical cytology of the cervix) and 175 women with normal cytological smears (controls), lower vitamin B12 levels were found to be associated with abnormal cervical cytology.
The relative odds of abnormal cytology with increasing vitamin B12 levels were assessed using logistic regression analysis.
Results found that the mean vitamin B12 level of women with abnormal cervical cytology was significantly lower than that of women with normal cervical cytology.
No significant difference in mean folate level was found between the 2 groups of women.
The authors conclude, "It is recommended that women should consume not only folate-rich foods such as fruits and vegetables, but also vitamin B12-rich foods such as meat, fish, milk products and eggs in a balanced way."
