Essiac Product Review Though the Eyes of Mali Klein

By Arrow Durfee c 2012

I had the opportunity to attend a workshop lead by the Essiac expert, Mali Klein in Missoula, Montana this past October, 2012. Mali has stood in the direct line of receivership to Rene Caisse’s papers as given to her via Sheila Snow, who worked with Rene for three years as a biographical researcher to Rene Cassie’s life history as a healer with Essiac Tea for the treatment of cancer and other serious diseases.

Sheila Snow had access to many of the writings, notes and letters of Rene Caisse. These papers were shared with Mali due to their friendship and together they wrote several books on the work of Rene Caisse R.N. based on the information they received through these papers, as well as Sheila’s firsthand experience in personally knowing Rene. Sheila Snow passed away April 7, 2008, at the age of 79, leaving Mali to continue the work of revealing the Essiac mysteries.

After reading and evaluating all the papers and historical accounts of Rene and her work they came to some very important conclusions that Essiac users should understand. All of these insights are recorded in their book called “The Complete Essiac Essentials.” Through their research into thousands of notes and personal writings and taped conversations of Rene with patients and associates they were able to conclude the likely reasons why the Essiac formula had changed over the years from the original 8 herb product that had been revealed to Rene by Mrs. Johnson which had cured her breast cancer. Today a four herb product is what is sold on the market by most manufactures of Essiac. Mali and Sheila believed that the current products on the market, although helpful to some patients, do not provide the essential ingredients in the proper form. The changes in the formula over the years potentially short change patients who hope for cure of cancer with Essiac. The intent of the book is to reveal these changes and to promote what they believe is likely the correct formula.

Originally, the 8 herb formula was given to Mrs. Johnson by a Native American medicine man of unknown name and tribe. This formula had been developed for the specific condition of breast cancer. This was the formula given to Rene Caisse from which she eventually extracted the 4 basic herbs with which to treat most cancer cases. Over the years it became evident, through the collected writings, that Rene had difficulty obtaining all the herbs of the 8 herb formula as well as obtaining them in their correct form. Due to a lack of supply of proper ingredients substitutions were experimented with.

One of the main changes made in the 4 herb formula is the substitution of the root of sheep sorrel for the leaf as the leave is more abundant and can be cut from the same roots up to three times per season. Rene was often treating up to two hundred patients at a time and sheep sorrel was considered the most important ingredient. Sheep sorrel was also processed independently from the other herbs for muscular injection purposes. In her letter to the Sloan Kettering Institute for Cancer Research dated 1975, to Dr.Stock, she stated that the root of Sheep Sorrel should always be included in the formula and that it’s the most important ingredient, with the leaves and stems no good alone. All Essiac or Essiac like formulas on the market today contain only leaf and stem.

Based on this letter, Sheila and Mali came to the conclusion that the original 8 herb formula, and consequently, the 4 herb formula, should be made with only sheep sorrel root, not leaves. The root is more powerful and in Mali’s experimentations over the years the root based products have produced better results.

During this workshop Mali provided for us tea samples from 7 commercially available Essiac like products to taste and consider. These are products that are easily assessable through an internet search or may be available in your local health food store. None of these products contained sheep sorrel in root form. Only one product listed the percentages of the different herbs used. Rene Caisse specified the percentages required to get the job done but only one manufacturer was willing to label what their percentages were. Most of the products contained visible herb. You could identify though simple observation leave, stems and roots. They were coarse ground, generally the best grind for making a decoction. One product appeared as a fine powder and was a deep cinnamon like color which made up to be a very dark brown, almost black, as a black tea. The color of this product did not resemble any of the other product constituents and hence its quality was subject to much scrutiny and objection by the workshop attendees. This single product was the one which bore Rene Cassie’s photo on the box with the Essiac name patented. No other product is allowed to use the Essiac name due to name patent laws. Some of the products in our observation did not provide the correct sheep sorrel according to Rene’s recipe. Some of the products in our observation did not specify the correct rhubarb root according to Rene’s recipe i.e. Rheum palmatum – Turkey rhubarb.

Mali stressed several times throughout the workshop that if you want to be sure that the product that you are using is the best in quality with the right ingredients it is essential that you grow your own herbs, or obtain them from a known source that is dedicated to growing the correct variety of each species, under the correct conditions with the correct herbal processing techniques. At this time there is no company that mass produces such a product. There are a very few independent herb growers who offer their very limited supply to those who come to them for assistance. If herbs are sourced from outside of the United States they have been irradiated upon entry into the country. Irradiated herbs are considered inferior products and they may not hold their original herbal potency. Contact your supplier and start asking questions.

This site offers a quality Essiac product. renecaissetea.com/

Essiac, even though it is not likely properly formulated, still often helps people with serious disease. But just consider how much better it could be if the current products offered were correctly made. Many more people would be restored to excellent health.
If you have a serious disease that you are trying to treat you must make sure that your medicine is of superior quality. Your healthy outcome depends on it and if you have been using Essiac but have not received the benefits that you had hoped for you need to reconsider the product you are using. “The Complete Essiac Essentials” book (ISBN 978-899077-10-6) is required reading for any Essiac user. It will provide dosage instructions, planting and harvesting instructions, processing considerations, storage information and all the myths and lies that have been created over the years either by ignorance, hearsay or by conniving marketing schemes.

If you are going to take the time and money to use Essiac learn to do it right. Hopefully over time market pressure will force companies to come to terms with the truth and to inspire them to create the highest quality products for those suffering from serious disease.

Interesting post.

Re Sheep Sorrel: My understanding is that Rene used the whole plant, root to leaves. Rene termed it "the herb that will destroy cancer". It has featured in numerous cancer folk remedies over the years.

Incidentally, so has burdock root. A Hungarian study into burdock root in the 60s found it to have "considerable anti-cancer activity". And a Japanese study in 1984 discovered it contains a substance capable of reducing cell mutation.

Dr Gary Glum is said to have bought the true 4 herb Essiac formula from Mary MacPherson for a handsome sum.
And Dr Charles Brusch, who worked with Rene, is said to have been given the full 8 herb formula direct from Rene, and together with Elaine Alexander they produced it and launched it commercially as Flor-Essence.

Rene Cassie for many years gave injections of sheep sorrel. She said it was the most important part. No one has been able to replicate the sheep sorrel injections. Mali tried to based on what they could glean from the writings but the injection formula was never written down. The injection that they tried to make was extremely painful and Mali refused to use it again. Indictions from those using the 4 herb forumula in Europe suggest that the root is prime. Those forumulas that use only leaf don't work as well. If you harvest ariel throughout the summer your root will be weaker. You can only harvest ariel when you harvest root in the fall and combine them, or just harvest root in the spring when before the plant starts to grow.

Dr Charles Brusch did not receive the herb recipe according to this book. Although they did work together for about 1 year in 1959 Rene sent him unidendified herbs for his trials that were cancelled due to no conclusive evidence,

That didnt sway Brusch through. He persuded essiac and they exchanged 29 letters from 1979 until 1994, the last letter to his wife, 9 months after his death from Parkinsons disease and Alzheimers. In many of the letters Dr Brusch kept requesting to have the forumula but Rene refused to give it. All these letters were available to Sheila Snow and Mali to read.

Brusch had been working on some type of herbal formula and there is a quoted statement of his in the book, with assist from other people and was involved in the Resperin company. But this was not the essiac forumla as he had never been given it. The 8 herb formula was rarely even used as Cassie had dropped the Red Clover early on and had great difficult acquiring goldthread. .. red clover likely dropped due to its estrogenic effects in my estimation, and if I recall correctly Mali might have agreed with this. The origianl 8 herb formula was for breast cancer.

Flor Essence is not the origianl formula and it was part of our sampling in the workshop.. It is a very weak decoction and it has blessed thistle and sea kelp in it that Rene never used and is not mentioned even once in 5000 pages and many taped conversations. It also does have red clover and I wonder if that is appropriate for all cancers...?

This book was writen to clear up many of these matters, all based on the 5,000 papers left to Sheila and Mali to review and report on. Mali believes that Flor essence is perhaps one of the worst formulas out there, along with Essiac, the product that carries the patented product name with Rene's photo on the green box. Certainly their product looked like trash to me not looking or smelling anything like the herbs. Mali thinks that it is burnt in the manufacture process.

Rene spent most of her life being hounded by different physicians and snake oil salesmen for the formula. It appears that she never gave the 8 herb formula out to anyone but it is found in the documents. The four herb formula is notoriously misprepared by mishandling the herbs, collecting them incorrectly, using the wrong parts of the herb etc.

As I said red clover was first to be dropped from the forumula, then periwinkle. Goldthread was desirable but extremely difficult to obtain even to this day. Water cress is also more difficult to obtain and only the root is used. I dont know if more recent commercial production of water cress would qualify as a good source of herb. Fortuanetly I have access to it in a natural spring that actually supplies our town with water.. held on private land that I have been given permission to harvest from. I will start next spring.

Seems that great errors were also made in attemped replication of the forumula and by doctors testing the forumula in the measurements of herb also.

The original 8 herb forumla contained.

sheep sorrel
burdock root
slippery elm
turkey rhubarb
watercress
goldthread
red clover
periwinkle

The book is loaded with documentation and its so much easier to just get it and read it than me trying to explain everything.

Much of the errors in the 4 herb forumla today lie in three factors... not using the sheep sorrel root, not using burdock root and seed and in the measurments of the herbs.

Other controversy surrounds using Indian rhubarb root (Rheum officinale) instead of Turkey Rhubarb (Rheum palmatum).

Also, its vital that the herbs be organic and not irradiated. It used to be the case, I don't know wheter it still is, that imported herbs were irradiated....Which would have undermined any preparations they were included in.

In the book The Essiac Report by Richard Thomas they claim
' What they (Caisse and Brusch) discovered through extensive experimentation on human patients was that by adding more herbs (called potentators) to Essiac's core formula, Essiac became even more effective.'
Whilst Brusch claims to have received the formula direct from Rene Caisse, further to my earlier post, I've just noticed by delving deeper into the book that it is Brusch alone who lays claim to adding the 4 extra herbs of Flor-Essence.
He is also quoted as saying
"I have in fact cured my own cancer, the original site of which was the lower bowel, through Essiac alone....
I have taken Essiac every day since my diagnosis and my recent examination has given me a clean bill of health. I remained a partner of Rene Caisse until her death in 1978 and was the only person who had her complete trust and to whom she confided her knowledge and 'know-how' of what she called Essiac."
But who said what and did what, it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. Only the formula and the dssemination of the 'sacred knowledge' surrounding it matters.
Too many people dying...

Footnote on the periwinkle: Allopathic cancer treatment Vincristine is derived from periwinkle.
A bit of an irony lost on most people given the Cancer Industry's claim that herbal cancer treatments are 'fraud', 'quackery' and 'don't work' !!!
And it came in in the 50s at the height of the attacks against natural cancer treatments. They were rubbishing herbal treatments on one hand, while trying to produce pharmaceutical drugs out of them on the other!

The reports you are making Knightofalbian do not seem accurate. There are only two herbs in floressence that are not part of the original essiac formula... sea kelp and blessed thistle so how could Bursch have added 4 herbs?

also in letters dated way past his one year of work with Cassie he keeps asking for the formula. He did not get it from her but from someone else. She did not have complete trust in him and did not give him the forumula and he was not her partner for all those years.

I would not use floressence, having sampled the product compared to over 10 others, it was the weakest.

The reports I am making? I'm quoting from the book.

The Brusch quote is from a signed, witnessed and executed legal document of Dr Brusch dated 11th April 1990. Reproduced in facsimile form in the book. (The Essiac Report)

Quoting from the book, not my words, "The core of the Flor-Essence formula passed on by the Objibwa medicine man, is sheep sorrel, burdock root, slipperty elm and rhubarb root. As was mentioned in section One, Dr Brusch added other herbs to the core formula when he found that the additional herbs (usually imported and thus unavailable to the Ojibwa) worked as powerful potentiators to the core formula. The formula which is now called Flor-Essence has in fact been proven by Dr Brusch to be even more effective than the original formula, but it should be emphasized that the core of the formula passed on by the Ojibwa medicine man has been retained in Flor-Essence...it's heart and soul'

Flor-Essence has only ever been marketed as a herbal tonic, it therefore has never run into the conflict Essiac has and is as such is readily obtainable via any High Street healthstore.
Global internet shopping may have taken the shine off that advantage, though Essiac, albeit for political reasons, is still banned in many countries...

Just curious, but have you had cancer? If not, how can you gauge which of the 10 variants you tried was most effiicacious?

There are various Essiac/4-herb teas available. And most important of all, it does work.
These are all recent testimonials from just one of the aforementioned sources. Well worth reading. Helps animals too.

It is. Red clover doesn't just have anti-cancer compounds, it's also a powerful blood cleanser.

Ah Ha! I thought so. I saw objibwa at the health food store, looked at the label, and saw that it contained the ingredients of Essiac. I was wondering who was copying whom.

I don't need anymore Anthraquinone in my life, since I already frequently take something with rhubarb in it. But I will put objibwa on my list of things to try.

Exactly! Every herb in both the 4 and 8 herb formulas acts in a synergistic effect with the other herbs. Each has its specific role.
You could say that sheep sorrel and burdock root are the main 'strike force' of the formula, both are potent cancer fighters in their own right. Combining them together increases the effectiveness of the remedy.
They set about attacking the tumour and breaking it down, and then the 'second wave', as you might say, of the formula comes into play - cleansing, detoxifying and replenishing. A vital role.
It is a brilliant combination of medicinal herbs. Inspired. I'm tempted to say 'sacred medicine'.

Technically Resperin have 'copyright' on the name Essiac. They are also supposed to be the ones who alone hold the true formula. Though the true formula is the worst kept secret in naturopathy! Which is why you'll find various generic formulas calling themselves Ojibwa herbal tea, 4 herb formula, Rene Caisse tea and so on. Though the herbs are the same.
