My old college roomate became clinically depressed and told me he does not want to be friends anymore; Reason: I watch Fox News. He was one of those people who made 6 figures for doing basically nothing and now he does not. Those jobs do not exist like they did before. He also upgraded a home (out west) and the value fell. He blames Bush and Fox news for all this. Amazing the lack of logic.
and I be he believes that all these bail outs and the change will fix everything too huh..... It scares me how some people think
He said that he cares less what Obama does. The important thing is conservatives do not like him. When we were still talking he called me up once whining about someone at the gym driving in, in a 175k car. I asked why does that bother you? He said, Because I should have it!
It is in the false belief that our reality should provide all our dreams, that material plenty will bring happiness, that Bush or Obama or Fox or CNN can control our inner state of purpose and creativity that depression comes. This man has given over his spiritual power through wrong thinking to the image makers and hence will never find an internal peace.
Maybe he needs a serrotonin boost to pull out of his dark dream. Try offering 5-HTP, or meditaion or prayer, or all three.

Sometimes in relationships like this one much is learned from one another. It is an opportunity for developing unconditional love that addresses the soul rather than the personality
He needs to know that happiness and inner peace doesn't revolve around material things. Look at how many rich movie stars and singers end up committing suicide, they're empty inside. I hope he has a change of heart soon, I wish him the best.

That's the mentality held by many. It's as though their material accumulation is what defines their self-worth & how they view the definition of being a successful human being.

I learned about 5-6 yrs ago that money and material things do not bring happiness. But there is this culture of entitlement in our country which is self destructive. As long as I can travel to cool places a few times a yr and have good food (and good beer), I am happy. Given a choice of a BMW or a coupel vacations per yr, I would take the vacations. Besides, who the hell needs 500 dollar tune ups and 120 dollar oil changes.
So what is happiness? As I see it there are two kinds of people in this world. There are those who like others and there are those who like them selves. Obviously then those who like others are the more secure and thus the happier. Consequently, liking others is a big part of happiness.

What is happiness? True happiness comes from making others happy.
If you live a selfish, materialistic life you will never find fulfillment or purpose.
Oh, Knight, truer words were never spoken than those you spoke here. All material things pass away just as this embodiment does. Life is 'as an ether' dissapearing into nothingness. I'm not sure exactly where that verse is in the Bible but I remember reading it. I came across the following video which contains a message I found very profound. The video is about communicating with the dead but the message is so profound that I hope all can see. It is about 'unconditional love' and the value of that....maybe the Beatles really did have the answer after all....'all you need is love"....I hope this helps somebody.
"If I speak in the tongues[a] of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames,[b] but have not love, I gain nothing."
