Getting some Sunshine frequently also helps do away
w/depression. And, there's NO excuse this time of the
year for not getting Sun.

Exercising in the Sun is even better ... as long as you use good judgment.

Maybe part of the explanation is that exercise/physical activity causes release of endorphins -- the safe, body-made morphine.

That's part of it but I think the link below helps to explain another piece of the puzzle.
