Default Buying in bulk

It seems the prudent thing to do to buy foods in bulk and save. Some stores give 10% off when you buy a dozen or more of an item.

With the water damage to America's heartland for lentils and beans it's a good time to stock up. They save for years and you can put them in buckets. My Whole Foods gives 10% off of 25 pound bags.

Gamma lids are awesome for buckets. http://www.gamma2.net/new/GSL.html

Home Depot sells food safe buckets in their paint department.

The best price I have found for gamma lids and buckets is at Walmart. They have a contract with Emergency Essentials.

You can live a very long time on just beans and rice, but how depressing for the spirit. Be sure to store seasonings that make it all taste good.

Geesh, wish I knew Whole Foods gave 10% off on bulk... they certainly didnt volunteer that info to me...

Be aware that brown rice will go rancid. It does not store long term. I keep about 25# in the freezer most of the time as it will store up to a year, possibly a little longer there. I have buckets of white rice stored. I will only use it if I really need to.

Emergency Essentials also now sells to the public...They have a facebook page, and has a monthly giveaway

I would also seriously consider buying heirloom seeds and storing them also... A friend of mine, was invited by a morman friend of hers to a canning event they had last year.... You bought all the food you wanted to buy and then you bought the cans, and they canned them for you....they brought a special canning machine down... My friend said that she canned a bunch of seeds this way...Im assuming as long as she kept it out of the extreme heats they still should be good right. She brought me over a can of potatoe flakes, a can of oatmeal, a can of wheat and a can of whole wheat, for me to try (apparently the cans got wet on the outside and she was afraid of them rusting) The oatmeal and the potatoes tasted like normal everyday products bought in the store.... I sort of like the idea of canning some for future days

Yep, Mormons often have canning centers in many cities.. just call a local church and ask. They don't mind if your not mormon to use their facilities and there is no charge but would be nice to off some time at the cannery to help others as a trade.. and you would learn a lot too
