Topic: Vitamin D May Help to Protect

Against Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Keywords: AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION, VISION, EYESIGHT, EYES - Vitamin D, 25-Hydroxyvitamin D, Diet, Milk, Nutraceuticals
Reference: "Association between vitamin D and age-related macular degeneration in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 1988 through 1994," Parekh N, Chappell RJ, et al, Archives of Ophthalmology, 2007; 125(5): 661-669. (Address: The Cancer Institute of New Jersey, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, New Brunswick, NJ, USA).
Summary: In a study involving data from a nationally representative sample of 7,752 subjects, 11% of whom had age-related macular degeneration (AMD), serum vitamin D levels were found to be inversely associated with early AMD. Subjects in the highest quintile of vitamin D were found to have a 0.64 odds ratio for early AMD, compared to subjects in the lowest quintile. Furthermore, intake of milk was inversely associated with early AMD (OR=0.75), intake of fish was inversely associated with advanced AMD (OR-0.41), and consistent intake of vitamin D from supplements was inversely associated with early AMD among subjects who did not consume milk daily (OR=0.67). These results suggest that vitamin D may help to protect against age-related macular degeneration. The authors conclude, "Additional studies are needed to confirm these findings." http://www.vitasearch.com/get-clp-summary/36453
