Default Young child has amalgam filling

I am living in Hanoi, Vietnam. My wife went and did something very silly today by getting an amalgam filling for our 5 year old son. I am painfully aware of how bad these things are and I am also aware of how dangerous it can be if they're not taken out properly by a specialist. I am very worried for my son and don't know the best course of action tight now, since I don't trust Vietnamese doctors/dentists at all. The damage is done, so now I am trying to minimize any further harm to my boy. Should I just wait until his tooth falls out naturally (which may be a few years still) or should I get it removed ASAP? Which is the least harmful option?

Amalgam fillings are still standard procedure in dentistry all cross the globe.

On the assumption that your son's tooth is one of his milk teeth, the best thing is to leave it en situ until it falls out naturally.
Long term try to avoid sugary foods as much as possible. Not easy I know with kids, but there you are, sugar leads to tooth decay and the less he - or any of us for that matter - consumes the better.

I can understand your situation but it is better to wait for his tooth to fall naturally. Take proper precautions for your kid.

Dental amalgam is a filling material that is used to fill cavities brought about by tooth decay. If your child is suffering from severe pain then you may opt this way otherwise wait for the tooth to fall in a natural manner.
