Default Introducing Richard III

Having found the body of King Richard III scientists use their skills to establish what he actually looked like...
Fascinating.

In another recent document, they said that he was not actually a humpback, but did have a problem with his spine. think Shakespeare exaggerated much for drama. I'd be surprised if Richard III was as much of a tyrant as history notes.

Quote:
The skeleton also showed severe scoliosis - a curvature of the spine.

Although not as pronounced as Shakespeare's portrayal of the king as a hunchback, the condition would have given the adult male the appearance of having one shoulder higher than the other.

'History is written by the winners' as they say. Poor Richard suffered a major character assassination. Historians are now suggesting a more accurate portrayal of Richard III is that he was actually a brave man and a good and just king.

The pictures of the skeleton shown on television here from the archaeological dig certainly showed curvature of the spine. Though apparently it wasn't so bad as to be classified a hunchback.

Much jubilation among British historians at the discovery and the clearing of Richard the III's name.

Me too.

He was only King for 2 years. What harm could be done? He did lose the throne for his line, the Plantagenets. Thus began the Tudors.

But the 'Princes in the tower' won't be undergoing the same forensic testing...

Exactly. The Tudors took over. Always a worry that if things go pear-shaped someone from the previous royal lineage will turn up and lay claim to the throne, as happened with 'Bonnie Prince Charlie' for example, and if the people are unhappy with their lot...
Smearing the House of Plantagenet by branding Richard III a deformed, murderous tyrant is certainly going to make the prospect of a future Plantagenet king an unappealing prospect.

Also of course in those days of ignorance and superstition, deformities were seen as a punishment by God.

My daughter just informed me that the mother of my kids was distantly related to King Richard the lll. So what? Big deal. But guess what. My wife suffered from curvature of the spine.

That would not really happen would it? I mean for one thing, who would want the job? And for another, the royal family seems to be the servant of Parliament.

I meant back in those days, olden times. Pre-Cromwell the monarch was absolute ruler.
Being King of England was certainly at times a bit of a poisoned chalice!, but the lust for power and wealth...There was never any shortage of those wanting the position.

I see. There is a lot of wealth involved. The Queen is a very wealthy person, but she would never sell the ancient castles or the jewels. So she is asset rich. Someone might want that.
